I would like to talk about my homebrew world, Muluth. (mah-LOOTH)
The halfling people of Muluth banded together early on for protection. The spread-out, tribal way of living proved far too dangerous, as they were not strong enough to fend off larger predators on their own.
Though initially prideful, and less than willing to coexist, the halfling families began to merge until a large community sprawled out over the lands of the plains and forests.
Soon after the humans and dragonborn began developing their civilizations and banding tribes together into the first small cities, they made contact with the halflings, who were living a simple lifestyle in the rolling green hills south of the Tartann Mountain range, a land they called Flat Run.
Trade was established between the races, and the “Weefolk” colloquialism came about fairly quickly while doing business. Some halflings did not like the name, others did not mind, but it stuck. Still to this day, halflings in Muluth are generally referred to as Weefolk.
Nine years after trade began between the halflings and the fledgling human/dragonborn cities, an evil cabal of dragonborn attacked and destroyed a small halfling village. The representatives of the followers of Bahamut went to the halflings and tried to convince them of their non-involvement. Seeds of mistrust were sowed that day.
The halfling people turned to their goddess, Avandra, for aid. They wanted more power to be better able to defend themselves against attackers. Wise elders were shown the light and the path. Avandra touched them with nature magic, given the halflings’ love of the land, and the wise elders founded the druidic Vis Magus.
The Vis Magus started small, but grew into a sect of halflings capable of learning and wielding the druidic nature magic gifted them by Avandra. Within the halfling society, there was a disagreement over whether the Vis Magus should be kept secret, or if it should be more public or obvious. Keeping it a secret would make the halflings continue to appear vulnerable and helpless, but also doesn’t allow possible enemies to see what they’re actually capable of – so that their power cannot be measured by outsiders.
Because of this split in opinion, the legend of the Vis Magus still exists today. Some of the modern Weefolk attempt to discount their power, or outright state it never happened. Others admit that the Vis Magus were real, and can recount their tales of old.
After the humans and dragonborn of Halasthas began hunting goblins and orcs, they learned that the fell creatures had aligned themselves with a powerful red dragon named Tiamat. While the leaders of Halasthas proposed how to approach the situation, the Vis Magus agreed to help them track down the dragon and defeat it.
This confrontation led to Tiamat attacking Halasthas, and to the rise of the Tartinn Phoenix. Members of the Weefolk community are given a place on the Halasthas ruling council, so that the voices of their people in Flat Run could be heard by the greater populations of Muluth. Open trade agreements are made between all nations and peoples of Muluth, and Halasthas triples in size to accommodate booming business.
However, after almost two hundred years of peace and prosperity, Tiamat returned. Now enhanced with god-like powers, Tiamat ascended to the heavenly planes and killed Bahamut, the patron god of the humans and dragonborn. Her armies attack and take control of Halasthas, devastating the population. She offers umbrage to the dragonborn, proclaiming herself as their new matriarch god. Those that turn to her form the Soparcreste faction.
The Voynerod War begins, with the men and dwarves of the newly formed Dvargaduine taking on the Soparcreste dragonborn. After seventeen years of war, Flat Run is invaded and conquered by the Soparcreste. They occupy the halfling land, and use its resources for their armies. They force the Weefolk to serve them. The Vis Magus, unable to stand against the Soparcreste and the monsters they command, retreat into the Calen Anoron forest, and the caves of the Tartann Mountains to try and bolster their strength.
While battles rage between the Dvargaduine and the Soparcreste forces, the Vis Magus began guerrilla tactics against the occupation within Flat Run (now renamed Ferma Lucra by the Soparcreste). They attempted to frustrate the leaders enough that they would leave. This had an unintended effect: the Soparcreste soldiers and their monsters started combing the forest to find the Vis Magus. Many halflings died during these raids, and the power of the Vis Magus diminished significantly.
As Tiamat’s armies gain more control of the western lands, they declare the borders of Tara Natala, within which fell Ferma Lucra. The Soparcreste occupation within the halflings’ land was strengthened by the addition of more troops. Everything seemed hopeless.
The Tartinn Phoenix of Halasthas reawakens, and the Dvargaduine army marches with the Knights of the Phoenix, though many of them are slain. Following this defeat, the elves of Calen Anoron join the Vis Magus to give them a fighting chance against the Soparcreste occupation. Together, they wage a dramatic campaign against their oppressors throughout the communities of Ferma Lucra, and succeed in forcing them to retreat.
The elves and the Vis Magus – along with handfuls of normal, halfling troops – align themselves with the Dvargaduine as the tieflings emerge and prove themselves. This new alliance of the free peoples of Muluth stands strong, and with enough numbers to have a fighting chance against the Soparcreste.
The Dekampa Muluth (the Battle for Muluth) begins on the hot, desert plains outside Halasthas. The incredible conflict lasts weeks, until Tiamat the Godslayer returns to Muluth and destroys the capital city. The Dvargaduine allied armies are decimated.
With the elves of Calen Anoron now preoccupied with their own crisis, the halflings are near powerless to stop the Soparcreste from retaking Ferma Lucra.
The Dragul Empire rises to power. The Weefolk are enslaved following Cel Inrobi – “the enslaving” – and forced to continue farming and working their land for the good of the Empire. Policing forces from House Albastra oversee operations within Ferma Lucra, though House Otrava has some presence there as well. The green dragonborn scouts of House Otrava mainly use Ferma Lucra as a home-base as they search Calen Anoron for the now-missing elves and for any remnants of the Vis Magus.
In order to make the west-to-east crossing of Muluth easier for travelers and caravans, Emperor Desfasurare founds Ferrytown at the edge of Basseng Lake. This smaller lake, which feeds into the far larger Lake Faras, provides a much simpler journey than taking the fiercely windy Uragan Pasa to the north or crossing the Veins rivers to the south.
Emperor Amabilaur comes to power, and enacts Cel Osvoboz – “the liberation.” The Weefolk are freed. House Albastra attempts to keep a foothold within Ferma Lucra, saying their forces will be remaining in order to provide “protection” to the halflings, but a deal written up by the Weefolk and the dwarves seals an airtight contract with the Dragul Empire, forcing all militarized personnel out of Ferma Lucra – now renamed Virdis Cael.
Now free, the Weefolk are in business for themselves. They use their lush, ample land to grow vast myriad crops and raise livestock, which they then sell to the other nations of Muluth. This arrangement has made Virdis Cael a very rich nation. Though, because the halflings have never had much use for coin – finding everything they need within the land – they don’t appear rich. They do not live lavish lives.
Talk among the leaders of Virdis Cael has lately been on whether or not they should use some of the coin to hire an army or raise a militia, since the Vis Magus are all but gone. Others want to try to purchase land to expand the borders of Virdis Cael into Calen Anoron.
The desert oasis city of Bogat, just south of Virdis Cael on the border of Tara Natala, is used as a trading post between the two nations – and any others who wish to visit the city. There are guarded hand-offs of goods between the Empire and the Weefolk, and sellswords make a great living working with these caravans. The halflings have invested a lot of coin into Bogat to make it more than just a desert oasis, but a home away from home.
The “capital” of Virdis Cael is the original established town of Flat Run. The current governor of Virdis Cael is Prefect Timothy Feygrass. While the Weefolk do not necessarily crave a system of law and order, nor is there a dire need for a policing force, a light form of government does exist for the purposes of interaction with the Dragul Empire and the other nations of Muluth. Timothy is the second governor appointed by the people, after the first one died of old age. Timothy is young – in his mid-thirties – and somewhat inexperienced with politics, though he is eager and sincere, and a bit naive. He views the Vis Magus as an antagonistic force that poses a danger to all Weefolk.
Weefolk typically live to about 150 years, but few have been known to go beyond that. Their names and language are derived from Old English and traditional Latin words. They have first names and surnames. A Vis Magus druid usually takes on a symbolic name that relates to nature in some way.
There’s the history of the Weefolk of Muluth! Another full-article history for one race – though, admittedly, I’m repeating some information from previous history articles, such as that regarding the Voynerod War and Tiamat’s rise to power. But I like retelling these parts from each perspective…so, sorry, not sorry.
I’ve always been fond of the halfling race, and I’m glad I was able to give them a little something special that the other races don’t have – the mysterious Vis Magus druids. I really like this part of the Muluth history, and I’m excited to see how much it plays into the campaign if and when players begin inhabiting my world!
